Birch Tapping

helenstringfellow

On Wednesday we were delighted to be able to tap the sap from a silver birch tree. This involved cutting a thin branch and tying a plastic bottle to the end to catch the dripping sap. This is a very special activity that can only be done for two weeks of the year when the sap is rising and just before the the leaves pop open. The sap can be collected and drunk. We were so pleased as we'd timed it just right and the taste was like sweet water.

Other activities we enjoyed were making covers for the seasoning firewood corrals, collecting birch brash, sowing broccoli, carrot and pea seeds to grow in the poly tunnel and peeling a large chestnut pole that will eventually be an upright post for the new wood storage shed.
